The Courtyard House was built around a premise as old as the subcontinent: that the most valuable space in a home is not a room, but the sky above an open centre. The two-storey residence organises all its rooms: bedrooms, kitchen, living spaces- around a landscaped courtyard that occupies roughly a fifth of the ground floor footprint.
The construction is deliberately regional. Brick jali screens filter light and air on the upper floor. A filler slab: a traditional technique that reduces concrete use by 20% and steel by 30% by incorporating hollow elements within the structural matrix, covers the main living zone, creating a ceiling that changes through the day as light passes through the glass blocks embedded in the slab.
